Last Update: May 2026
The World Bank through its Development Economics Impact (DECDI) unit conducted an Impact Evaluation (IE) Research Project to assess the impact of three interventions delivered to parents and adolescents aged 10–15 years in Northern Nigeria. The interventions included community screenings of aspirational videos, distribution of mobile phones preloaded with literacy and numeracy applications, and learning workshops that trained adolescents to become household literacy instructors. Implemented through a randomized control trial (RCT) across 88 school catchment areas in Jigawa State, Kano State, and Sokoto State, the study aimed to measure impacts on parental attitudes toward education and gender equality, adolescents’ life skills and digital awareness, school attendance and learning outcomes, empowerment, and neighborhood learning spillovers

Survey Implementation and Target Population
The survey implementation involved baseline and digital connectivity surveys across the three States. Following the listing of 39,611 eligible households, baseline data were collected from 5,280 randomly selected main households and 2,640 spillover households across the 88 communities. Interviews were conducted with parents or caregivers, adolescents aged 10–15 years, younger siblings aged 6–9 years, and neighboring households to assess spillover learning outcomes. The digital connectivity survey was conducted among adult females in the 2,640 spillover households, where mothers of spillover adolescents were administered the household questionnaire.
