Strengthening the Polio Programme through Enumeration of Under 5 children and Pregnant Women in Jigawa State

June 08, 2026

Last Update: June 2026

To tackle the challenge of zero dose children in Northwest Nigeria, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), supported by partners, introduced the Identify, Enumerate, and Vaccinate (IEV) plus Microplanning strategy. Hanovia Limited was engaged to lead implementation in Jigawa, covering all 27 LGAs and nearly 300 wards. The work began with IEV, followed by two rounds of Supplementary Immunization Plus Days (SIPD) in March and April 2026.

The objective of the project is to generate accurate settlement and household data, strengthen microplanning, and ensure comprehensive vaccination coverage for children under five and pregnant women.

Methodology, and Achievements

Hanovia coordinated microplanning, recruited and trained enumerators, and deployed vaccination teams using house to house, fixed post, and special team strategies. Daily review meetings, geo tracking, and digital reporting ensured real time monitoring and accountability.

The IEV exercise produced validated settlement databases that guided campaign planning. SIPD Round 1 achieved full settlement coverage, while SIPD Round 2 improved supervision and data quality. Together, the campaigns reached households across Jigawa, minimized missed children, and strengthened accountability systems, contributing significantly to Nigeria’s polio eradication efforts.
