Listing and Baseline Surveys for the Impact Evaluation of Community Movies Screenings,
Provision of Mobile Phones and Learning Workshops in Northern Nigeria

The project aimed to assess the effects of three interventions in Northern Nigeria: community screenings of aspirational videos, the distribution of mobile phones with educational apps, and learning workshops enabling adolescents to serve as literacy instructors. The survey was conducted as a randomized control trial across 88 school catchment areas in Jigawa, Kano, and Sokoto states.

Comprehensive Baseline Survey Reaches 7,920 Households Across Three States

A total of 40,000 eligible households were listed across the three States. Following the listing, 7,920 households were sampled for the baseline survey. Four questionnaires were designed for different respondent groups (main adults, adolescents, siblings, neighboring adolescents and neighbour female adults – digital connectivity surveys targeting mothers in spillover households).

Meetings with the research team, obtaining ethical approvals, review and programming of survey questionnaires, recruitment of field personnel, pretesting of questionnaires, training of baseline and digital connectivity surveys personnel preceded field data collection. The field data collection phase spanned approximately 14 weeks between May and September 2025.

Enumerators administered different questionnaires electronically. Rigorous protocols ensured proper respondent identification, community entry, and ethical practices, including informed consent and confidentiality assurances. The data collection process maintained strong adherence to protocols and achieved its targets.
